Beyond Grit - How to perform at your best

My Score: 9/10

Coverage: Mental Training

TLDR: A great book that is easy to follow and has a companion book to help you work through the exercises in the book. My second my used book on mental training behind confident mind.

In this book, Kamphoff reveals the ten practices that the world’s best use to gain the high performance edge. She shares the tools and strategies she’s taught executives, entrepreneurs, NFL ProBowl athletes, Olympians, college athletes, and championship teams. Based on almost twenty years of research and consulting with the world’s best, she provides a practical, inspiring, and easy-to-use guide to radically accelerating your performance and improving your happiness. I do have the audio version and have the paper version of the exercise book on the way, I am hoping this makes is easier to implement. There are also some resources on her website which are provided for free.

The book provides practical strategies to implement her practices into your life. Kamphoff teaches you how to develop the Ten Practices of the World’s Best:

1. The world’s best are gritty.

2. The world’s best are clear on their purpose.

3. The world’s best become a master of their thoughts.

4. The world’s best know themselves to master yourself.

5. The world’s best dominate the controllables. (And not worry about the things you can't control, I really struggle pre race with worrying about the weather, storms aplenty around here).

6. The world’s best own the moment.

7. The world’s best choose empowering emotions.

8. The world’s best own who they are.

9. The world’s best live and let go.

10. The world’s best choose their courage zone.

You’ll also discover 52 strategies that you can put in your High Performance Toolbox to develop these practices and change your daily life. Each chapter describes one strategy and ends with a powerful affirmation to help you develop the High Performance Mindset. I have tried to use these affirmation in my practice daily affirmation practices and have found some of them to be really useful.

The book is an inspiring and practical guide to help you "own your why," develop your grit, take control of your future, discover your purpose, thrive under pressure, and be your best more often. Whether you’re seeking to own your dream business, triple your income, be the best you can be in your sport, or merely achieve a higher level of personal satisfaction, Beyond Grit shows you how.

Overall, I think this book is a great read for anyone looking to improve their performance and achieve their goals. It has some really useful advice on things you can do to improve your confidence and build towards perfecting your race craft. I am tempted to get the paper version to go with the audiobook but will see what I get out the exercise book before purchasing.

Being Given the all Clear

Barefoot Britain by Anna McNuff

I have recently finished this audiobook and it was a good listen. I won't go into my usual level of detail as I didn't learn much from this to share on a running coaching site. Was it a good listen? Yes, Was it about running? Mostly. Was there any coaching tips? Not really. Advice from it? Have a good time, listen to your body and preserver.

January 2025 Progress

I am covering January a little early because we have just had the last parkrun of January so it is a good time to asses my progress against my time based goals, even if the progress goals could be better judged at the end of the month. parkrun times are all I have to go with regards to outcome goals and I have progressed my post illness PB from 17:35 to 17:21. I should also note that the 17:21 was run with the start as my 1k and then 1 mile PBs and just hanging on... yeah not great to do the first km in 16 minute flat pace according to Strava. There has also been much more consistency with my parkrun times, they are trending downwards with my times getting consistently quicker. I really feel I have a big PB in my legs and just need the competition, weather and pacing to be right.  The above times set me up nicely for my target Half Marathon and mean my predicted finish time, in comparable conditions, would be sub 80.... something for me to wrap my head around as my current PB (on a...
